If you fall on your head, for example while cycling, there is a risk of injury. Even if you wear a helmet, you can still sustain injuries, but the likelihood of serious injury is reduced due to wearing a helmet. The same applies when you wear a back protector. Although you cannot completely prevent injury, you are better protected.
The impact of a fall is “distributed” over your back by the back protector, making the fall feel less severe. The back protector also shields you from protruding points of a rock or curb, or when you fall onto a sharp object.
